Match Report - 19 Jan 2019, Alton Hockey Club Ladies 1st XI beat Haslemere 2nd XI
Alton travelled to Haslemere amidst dreary weather conditions for their second league fixture after Christmas. Despite last week’s confident result against Gosport the mood in the squad reflected the weather with the first half lacking excitement. Despite some strong runs down both sides of the pitch and a textbook drive into the circle from Ariana Hawkins sliding a square pass for Gayle Moir to slot past the Haslemere keeper, the opposition managed to step up and cut out many of Alton’s passes, counter attacking on several occasions resulting in some end to end hockey.
A half time pep-talk from Jon with his whiteboard and a plea to put more aggression and urgency into the game had the desired result. What followed was 35 minutes of high intensity hockey with Gayle Moir scoring her second goal from a broken down short corner coming off a pass from captain Vicky Small. The third goal came from a driving run up the right by Abi Green passed to Leah Coney on the penalty spot for a simple slap into the net, with the final goal coming from defender-turned-attacker Naomi Jones with the assist coming once again from Vicky Small. Despite the scoreline the defence were worked hard when Haslemere countered, successfully defending two short corners and providing keeper Ellie Chester with a clean sheet. A special mention goes to Megan Southgate and Emily Pascoe on their 1s debut, guided by the ever dependable cool head of centre back Kat Gilbert with Zoe Swan and Caroline Orange working hard in midfield. A great result to take into next weekend with Saturday's league fixture against tough opposition Hamble followed by the first round Hampshire Cup game against Gosport on Sunday. Both fixtures are at home.
